Energy Leadership Action Plan

America is facing an energy crisis. The skyrocketing costs to fuel our cars and heat our homes threaten the very foundation of our economy. Some politicians say we must choose between increasing domestic energy production and environmental destruction, between conservation and aggressively pursuing new technologies to break our dependence on foreign energy sources, between clean burning natural gas and energy derived from the sun and wind. These are false choices.

While other states and our nation are mired in partisan gridlock and bickering, Colorado must lead the way in solving our energy crisis now.

As your elected representative, I pledge to fight every day to ensure affordable and reliable energy supplies, reduce our dependence on foreign energy, invest in new technologies, and promote energy conservation and efficiency by :

Supporting Energy Conservation and Efficiency

• I will support incentives to reduce energy consumption and increase efficiency in appliances, automobiles, equipment, and buildings.
• I will support government and private sector pilot programs to demonstrate innovative conservation and efficiency measures such as conversion of automobile fleets to flex fuels.

Supporting Responsible Development of Traditional Energy Resources

• I will support using the best available technology to responsibly develop our natural energy resources in places like ANWR, our coastal regions, and on the Roan Plateau here in Colorado.
• I will oppose artificial government moratoriums on exploring and producing domestic sources of energy, including new restrictions on natural gas production in Colorado that are not based on science.
• I will oppose the politically motivated closure of existing coal-fired power plants until new technologies and new sources of energy are available to replace these important base-load facilities.
• I will support the diversification of our energy portfolio to include increased reliance on safe, non-polluting nuclear power.

Supporting Aggressive Development of Renewable Energy Resources and Emerging Technologies

• I will support research, development, and implementation of clean, renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, hydropower, and biofuels.
• I will support research, development and implementation of emerging clean coal technologies such as coal-to-liquids and coal-to-gas.
• I will support using the best available technology to responsibly develop our oil shale reserves in Colorado and other states.
